AB Hairs Guide to Correctly Applying Your New Wig
Believe it or not, there is a right way and wrong way to apply a wig. If you are just starting out or experimenting with wigs, you may not realize that there is an art to applying a wig. Many first timers may find wig application cumbersome but if you follow a few simple tips and tricks you will master the practice in no-time.
First Things First
Analyze Your Natural Hair.
Short Hair- Simply brush your natural hair back towards the crown of your head and use bobby pins to secure it in place. Make sure to get all of your hair off your neck and face.
Medium Hair- If you have medium length, thin hair, simply follow the short hair steps. If you have medium length, thick hair, you may need to secure the hair more robustly. We suggest using a rubber band to secure your hair to the nape of the neck and then use flat clips to secure the ponytail pieces to the crown of your head.
Long Hair- If you have long hair you will need to use one of the following two techniques. Either braid your hair into a “halo” around the crown of you head, (which can be a daunting task if you don’t have someone to help you), or separate your hair into quarters and twist it. Cross the bottom pieces behind your head, and clip them across the top. Cross the top pieces and clip them toward the crown of your head. This is an easy way to even your hair out on your head without a huge ponytail bulge.
The Second Step is more of a Tip
It is always a good idea to wear a wig cap. Use a wig cap on any hair length to hold it all in and ensure a smooth, even fit. Even if you are bald, use a wig cap. It will help keep the wig on.
Last but Not Least
Adjust your wig for head size. Each wig comes with elastic bands usually located in front of the ears. The elastic is used to tighten or loosen the wig in order to provide a more comfortable fit. Finally, place the wig on your head working front to back. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect immediately. You may find you need to make minor adjustments to get the fit just right. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be fitting your wig like a professional every time.
Finally, a great idea to “spruce up” your wig is to add accessories. Using a headband or barrettes can make your wig pop with sparkle. It will give you added security and provide a great, alternative look.
